About Seidman Investment Portfolio Organization (IPO)
Seidman IPO is the premier student-run finance organization at Grand Valley State University. Founded in 1976, the organization focuses on helping members develop the technical skills, professional network, and confidence needed to pursue competitive careers after graduation. Unlike highly selective finance clubs at larger target schools, Seidman IPO is intentionally open to all students interested in learning. The club hosts speaker events, networking opportunities, investment education sessions, office visits, and sector-based training led by student portfolio managers.
Established: 1976
Annual cohort: 80–100 students, 40-50 of which are core members
Partnered with Adventis: Since 2026

Why Seidman IPO Chose Adventis's FMC® Program
Daniel Dykstra, current President of Seidman IPO, completed the Adventis Financial Modeling Certification® (FMC®) Program himself and saw firsthand how the curriculum strengthened his technical foundation. Daniel worked with Adventis to introduce the FMC® Program to Seidman IPO members and begin building a stronger pipeline of technically prepared students at Grand Valley State. For Daniel, the value of the FMC® Program became clear after comparing it to other technical training resources.
“Adventis is really well structured for students. The 10-step process breaks everything down clearly, and the test at the end is what really separates it. You actually have to understand the material and earn the certification.”
— Daniel Dykstra, President of Seidman IPO, Investment Banking Summer Analyst at Piper Sandler
Daniel found that many traditional training resources relied too heavily on passive learning through videos or multiple-choice quizzes. In contrast, the FMC® Program requires students to build complete financial models while meeting strict formatting and technical standards.
That structure aligns well with the goals of Seidman IPO, where students are encouraged to take ownership of their development and prepare for recruiting timelines well before their coursework catches up.
“Recruiting timelines move too quickly to wait for your classes to catch up. At Grand Valley, a lot of this material isn’t taught until junior or senior year, which is already too late for investment banking recruiting. Adventis helps students get ahead early.”
— Daniel Dykstra, President of Seidman IPO, Investment Banking Summer Analyst at Piper Sandler
The program also became a useful signal inside the organization itself. Because Seidman IPO accepts all interested students, the FMC® Program helps identify members who are especially motivated and committed to developing technical skills outside the classroom.
“Everyone says they want to work hard and become a leader, but Adventis gives students an opportunity to prove it. Seeing who actually commits to the certification shows who’s internally motivated and willing to put in the work.”
— Daniel Dykstra, President of Seidman IPO, Investment Banking Summer Analyst at Piper Sandler
Building a Stronger Technical Culture at Grand Valley
Rather than requiring the FMC® Program, Seidman IPO promotes Adventis organically through mentorship, networking conversations, and peer recommendations. Daniel regularly introduces the program during coffee chats with younger students interested in investment banking or private equity. Many freshmen and sophomores view the certification as a way to gain a competitive edge before recruiting begins.
The response has been especially strong among highly motivated underclassmen. After Daniel became the first Adventis-certified student in the Class of 2027, additional students from the Classes of 2028 and 2029 quickly enrolled, with two students from the Class of 2028 already earning FMC® Level I certification. This early adoption is helping Seidman IPO build a stronger long-term pipeline of technically prepared students.
“Employers told me that if someone had taken Adventis, they’d have a pretty good chance in their process. It shows initiative, and it gives them something concrete to point to.”
— Daniel Dykstra, President of Seidman IPO, Investment Banking Summer Analyst at Piper Sandler
Because Seidman IPO is student-led, leadership believes the long-term impact of Adventis will compound over time as certified students mentor younger members and eventually move into leadership positions themselves. Daniel describes the process as a “flywheel effect,” where early student adoption naturally drives future participation and stronger technical standards across the organization.
Why the FMC® Program Works for Seidman IPO
Seidman IPO serves students with a wide range of career interests and experience levels. Some members pursue investment banking or private equity, while others are interested in corporate finance, wealth management, or broader business careers. The FMC® Program gives ambitious students a structured path to develop advanced technical skills earlier than they otherwise would through coursework alone. By combining financial modeling, proficiency in Excel, valuation concepts, and rigorous certification standards, the FMC® Program helps students build confidence and demonstrate initiative to recruiters and employers.
“It’s an investment that can potentially help you land a great offer and set you up for the next stage of your career. It also makes your classes easier because you become much more proficient in Excel and financial concepts.”
— Daniel Dykstra, President of Seidman IPO, Investment Banking Summer Analyst at Piper Sandler
For Seidman IPO, the partnership with Adventis is less about enforcing a requirement and more about creating a culture where motivated students proactively pursue technical excellence.
What Other Universities Can Learn from Seidman IPO’s Approach
Start Early: Students interested in competitive finance careers benefit significantly from technical training during freshman and sophomore year, before recruiting intensifies.
Use Peer Influence: Student leaders and upperclassmen often have the strongest influence on younger students’ engagement and buy-in.
Focus on Motivation Signals: In open-membership organizations, certifications like the FMC® Program can help identify students who are especially committed to professional development.
Build Long-Term Momentum: Even small groups of highly engaged students can create lasting cultural change within a finance organization over time.
As Seidman IPO continues expanding Adventis participation across future classes, the organization is building a stronger technical foundation that could help Grand Valley State students compete more effectively for finance opportunities in the years ahead.
