How M&A Advisors at Indiana University Built a Culture of Technical Excellence with Adventis’s FMC® Program
Founded in 2023, M&A Advisors at Indiana University was built to provide students with hands-on exposure to mergers & acquisitions, investment banking, and strategy consulting. M&A Advisors partnered with Adventis to strengthen technical preparation and reinforce financial modeling training. Today, the FMC® Program has become a core part of the organization’s development process and leadership pipeline, helping students build the technical skills and discipline needed to compete for highly selective finance roles.

About M&A Advisors at Indiana University
M&A Advisors at Indiana University is a self-governed student organization focused on preparing students for careers in investment banking, private equity, consulting, and broader M&A-related fields. The organization teaches students both the financial and strategic sides of mergers and acquisitions through technical workshops, mentorship, case competitions, and alumni engagement.
Unlike many finance organizations that primarily target students already committed to investment banking, M&A Advisors intentionally recruits students from a wide range of backgrounds and experience levels. The organization recruits new analyst cohorts each September and January, typically accepting 20-40 students per class from an increasingly competitive applicant pool.
Students progress through a structured leadership model that mirrors the investment banking industry itself: Analyst → Associate → Vice President → Director. Associates take on mentorship responsibilities, support case competition teams, and help lead technical training sessions for younger students.

Why M&A Advisors Integrated Adventis’s FMC® Program
M&A Advisors runs highly interactive weekly technical sessions covering accounting, valuation, DCF modeling, interview preparation, and investment banking fundamentals. However, club leadership recognized that one hour per week alone was not enough for students to fully internalize complex financial concepts. Adventis’s Financial Modeling Certification® (FMC®) Program became a way to extend learning beyond meetings and provide students with structured, hands-on modeling practice.
“Our club meetings are only one hour a week. Adventis helps reinforce learning outside the classroom. When students are consistently working through models and technical concepts on their own, you can really see the difference.”
— Zach Mason, President of M&A Advisors
For Zach personally, the FMC® Program helped bridge the gap between classroom theory and practical application.
“The videos and hands-on modeling are extremely helpful. I had done some financial modeling before, but it didn’t really click until I worked through the models alongside the instruction and understood why each step mattered. It really reinforced the technicals and helped build confidence.”
— Zach Mason, President of M&A Advisors
Rather than treating certification as optional enrichment, M&A Advisors has increasingly integrated Adventis into its leadership development process. Students seeking promotion from Analyst to Associate are now expected to complete the FMC® Level I Certification as part of the advancement process. This shift has helped create stronger accountability, better engagement, and a growing culture centered around technical excellence.
Building a Culture Around Certification
During the organization’s early partnership with Adventis, certification was encouraged but loosely enforced. Under Zach’s leadership, M&A Advisors implemented structured deadlines, progress tracking, and accountability measures tied directly to promotion opportunities.
“This is the first year we’ve really built Adventis into the culture of the club. Once students understand that certification is tied to leadership opportunities and long-term success within the organization, they take it much more seriously.”
— Zach Mason, President of M&A Advisors
The spring 2026 cohort of Associates, from the Class of 2029, were the first to be required to earn Adventis certification. M&A Advisors promoted 14 Analysts to the Associate program in February, and all of them are Adventis-certified. The leadership team believes that this requirement will not only boost certification rates but also enhance the technical quality of future leadership classes.
The organization also places heavy emphasis on student commitment and engagement. Attendance tracking, mentorship expectations, and structured promotion criteria help ensure that leadership positions are earned by students who are fully invested in the club’s mission and professional development culture.
Strengthening M&A Advisors' Reputation Among Recruiters
Although M&A Advisors was only founded in 2023, the organization has quickly developed a strong reputation within Indiana University’s finance community and among recruiters.
Club leadership members and alumni have secured placements at firms including Goldman Sachs, Moelis & Company, RBC Capital Markets, and other elite boutique investment banks.
“Our leadership places extremely well into investment banking because students come out highly prepared. Recruiters know our students are serious, technically strong, and willing to put in the work.”
— Zach Mason, President of M&A Advisors
Leadership also views the Adventis partnership as a differentiator that helps attract ambitious students to the organization.
“Adventis is one of the most unique offerings we have as a club. It’s something students consistently mention during interviews as a resource they’re excited to take advantage of.”
— Zach Mason, President of M&A Advisors
Expanding Technical Training at Indiana University
In addition to online access to the FMC® Program, Adventis hosts multiple in-person boot camps at Indiana University throughout the academic year. These boot camps cover the same material taught in the online FMC® Program and provide students with an immersive, collaborative learning environment.
Adventis and M&A Advisors are also working to develop future student trainers within the organization. Student Trainers lead boot camps, reinforce technical concepts for peers, and deepen their own mastery of financial modeling through teaching.
By combining structured online learning, peer mentorship, live workshops, and leadership accountability, M&A Advisors is building a scalable system for developing technically prepared finance candidates at Indiana University.
What Other Student Organizations Can Learn from M&A Advisors
Tie Technical Training to Leadership Development: By requiring certification for promotion into leadership-track roles, M&A Advisors created stronger accountability and engagement across the organization.
Reinforce Learning Outside Weekly Meetings: Students retain technical concepts more effectively when they continuously practice modeling outside of club sessions.
Build a Culture Early: Embedding technical rigor into organizational culture helps establish long-term standards and strengthens recruiter perception over time.
For M&A Advisors, the partnership with Adventis is about creating a culture where technical preparation, accountability, and mentorship drive student success.
