How the Michigan State University Financial Markets Institute (FMI) Integrated Adventis's FMC® Program into Its High-Finance Training Track

The Financial Markets Institute (FMI) at Michigan State University is known for transforming top finance students into high-performing candidates for careers in investment banking, private equity, and asset management. To sharpen technical preparation and signal readiness to recruiters, FMI partners with Adventis to offer the Financial Modeling Certification (FMC®) Program to current and aspiring FMI members. While not a requirement for acceptance into FMI, earning the certification has become a key differentiator among successful applicants and top-performing scholars.

Why the FMI Promotes Adventis’s FMC® Program

The FMI leadership team and members recognize that traditional learning methods—passively watching videos or reading long prep guides—fall short in equipping students with practical modeling and technical skills. Adventis offers a hands-on experience where students actively build and rebuild financial models, gaining a deep, intuitive understanding of accounting, valuation, and Excel.

“A lot of students at Michigan State are interactive learners—they don’t retain much just by watching videos or reading guides. With Adventis, you’re actually in Excel, building models, seeing things change, and learning by doing. That hands-on experience makes all the difference.”

Top-performing FMI applicants often arrive on day one with Adventis certification in hand. While not required, it has become a strong positive signal in the highly competitive recruitment process.

Elevating FMI's Technical Standards

FMI Scholars are expected to hit the ground running. Those who are Adventis-certified enter the program with confidence in technical interviews and an edge in internship recruiting. On average, six to seven scholars each year secure top-tier investment banking offers. Among these high performers, Adventis certification or significant engagement with the program is nearly universal.

“The earlier you get your feet wet with Adventis, the better. That knowledge compounds over time, and by the time interviews come around, you’re more technically competent and confident than most other candidates.”

FMI students recognize that watching a few videos isn't enough; mastery comes from consistent practice, feedback, and assessments.

A Training Ecosystem Built Around Adventis

The FMI and Adventis have built a structured support system to help students maximize the benefits of certification. Key strategies include:

1. Strategic Promotion to Freshmen

FMI scholars and faculty encourage freshmen to complete the FMC® Program as a way to stand out during the sophomore-year application process. Students who complete the program early internalize technical concepts ahead of formal recruiting cycles.

2. In-Person Boot Camps

Adventis hosts 3–4 boot camps annually at MSU. These boot camps are intensive, 8-hour days of instruction led by Adventis Student Trainers and cover the same material as the online program. Boot camps provide a collaborative environment where students ask questions, build models, and sharpen technical intuition.

3. Peer-Led Instruction

Student Trainers work closely with incoming students, providing guidance and mentorship while reinforcing their own technical knowledge.

4. Follow-Up Campaigns and Reminders

FMI leadership sends targeted emails to enrolled students who haven't completed the certification, inviting them to boot camps and encouraging them to finish the course. These nudges have driven improved engagement and completion rates.

Why the FMC® Program Works at MSU

FMI students juggle rigorous academic schedules, club commitments, and internship recruiting. Adventis provides a flexible, results-oriented training solution that aligns with FMI's mission of technical excellence.

“Adventis came up in a lot of my interviews, and recruiters were genuinely interested in hearing more about it. I noticed I was asked fewer technical questions, or at least sensed that interviewers were more confident in my technical ability because of my involvement with Adventis. It definitely gave me an edge.”

Students value the tangible feedback from Adventis's graded assessments, which reinforce learning and eliminate blind spots. FMI leadership sees the program as a key tool in helping students become job-ready and competitive.

What Other Universities Can Learn from the FMI's Success

  • Market the Program Early: Promoting the FMC® Program to freshmen builds a pipeline of prepared candidates for elite finance clubs.

Incentivize Completion: Use extra credit, boot camps, or club points to encourage certification before key recruiting milestones.

Leverage Peer Leadership: Student Trainers build community, foster accountability, and improve engagement with the program.

Align with Recruiting Needs: Employers want technically capable candidates. Adventis certification proves students are ready to contribute on day one.

“The feedback you get from the Adventis exams is incredibly valuable. If you take it seriously and learn from it, you won’t make the same mistake twice. I definitely learned that the hard way, but the feedback helped me improve quickly.”
