Breaking Into Finance from Non-Target Schools
Episode 7 | December 9, 2024
For many students outside the Ivy League, a career in finance may seem just out of reach. But as host Ben and guest William, a sophomore at Boston University, discuss in Episode 7 of the Adventis Coffee Chat podcast, determination, networking, and skill-building matter far more than your school’s name.
William, who grew up in California’s Bay Area, has been surrounded by finance his whole life. His father works in venture capital, and his mother in real estate. Despite not attending a “target” school, William’s passion for the industry and commitment to learning have already put him ahead of the curve. “I wanted to experience something different,” he explains, “so I came to Boston University and joined the finance club to surround myself with people who push me to work harder.”
Ben emphasizes that while non-target students don’t benefit from on-campus recruiting, “every bank has a non-target school process.” The key is learning how to access it. “Your goal when networking is not just to meet people,” he says, “but to learn about that process — who runs it, what the timelines are, and how to get your name on the list.”
Networking Intentionally
One of the biggest takeaways from the conversation is the importance of networking intentionally. Ben explains that sending endless cold emails isn’t the most effective approach. Instead, “you have to get on the phone with people,” he advises. Start with friends and family, then expand to alumni networks. Every call should end with a new connection: “When you’ve got one person on the line, make sure you get that referral.”
Ben also breaks down the three keys to a great cold email:
Point of connection – Identify something specific you share, such as an alma mater or hobby. (“Fellow ski athlete interested in Raine” is a subject line Ben loves.)
Ask for advice – Keep it short and respectful. People are more inclined to help when you seek their insight rather than a favor.
Close with logistics – Include specific dates and times you’re available. “It’s not too forward,” Ben says. “It’s respectful and efficient.”
As the discussion turns toward career preparation, Ben highlights the Financial Modeling Certification® (FMC®) Program as a vital step for students who want to stand out. “The FMC® Program focuses on keystrokes, efficiency, and accuracy,” he explains. “You’ll build a fully circular model, learn Excel without a mouse, and understand how financial statements connect. Those skills let you compete with — and often outperform — students from target schools.”
For William, that means there’s no better time to start. As Ben puts it, “Breaking into finance isn’t about shortcuts — it’s about building skills and relationships that show you’re ready to work hard and deliver.”
