Should You Choose Wealth Management Over Investment Banking?
Episode 50 | June 8, 2026
In Episode 50 of the Coffee Chat Podcast, Ben sits down with University of Illinois student Yash to discuss one of the biggest questions finance students face early in recruiting: should you pursue wealth management or investment banking?
For Yash, the answer became clear through hands-on exploration, networking, and self-awareness.
After arriving on campus, Yash immersed himself in multiple finance organizations, including investment banking, investment management, and real estate clubs. While he appreciated the technical rigor of investment banking, he realized the lifestyle and lack of client interaction were not the right fit.
“I felt that wealth management was a better fit for me,” Yash explained. “It combines analysis of stocks and the markets with face-to-face interaction and creating long-lasting relationships.”
A key turning point came during a networking conversation with a University of Illinois alum working at Merrill. That discussion gave Yash a granular look into the day-to-day life of a financial advisor, from investment committee discussions to client lunches and relationship management.
Ben emphasized that these conversations are often what help students uncover the right career path. “You just never know when that breakthrough conversation is going to happen,” he said.
The episode also provides practical recruiting advice for students navigating today’s accelerated finance timeline. Yash discusses how he prioritized junior-year recruiting, ultimately securing a Summer 2027 internship with J.P. Morgan Private Bank in Palo Alto.
The conversation dives into networking strategy, HireVue preparation, and how the Adventis Financial Modeling Certification® Program helped Yash strengthen his technical skills and recruiting confidence.
One of Yash’s biggest takeaways for students: authenticity matters.
“If you recruit for the position you actually want, it will show through,” he shared. “You’ll have more energy, you’ll want to do it more, and honestly, I think that’s the right career path.”
For students exploring careers in finance, Episode 50 offers a valuable look at how to evaluate fit, navigate recruiting, and make intentional career decisions early.
