Iker’s journey into finance began with curiosity. A sophomore at the University of Florida, he entered college without a clear understanding of the industry.

“I didn’t know what investment banking was, I didn’t know what private equity was, or wealth management,” he said.

Coming from a Hispanic household in Miami, Iker chose finance because of his strength in math and interest in pursuing something more specialized than general business. As he explored different paths, he quickly realized that building technical skills would be essential to stand out in a competitive recruiting environment.

That realization led him to Adventis and ultimately helped him secure a Summer Analyst role at J.P. Morgan Private Bank.

Student Success Story: Building Technical Confidence with Adventis

Iker first discovered Adventis through the University of Florida’s Financial Professional Development Program, where the Financial Modeling Certification® (FMC®) Program was offered to students to strengthen their technical skill set.

“I really wanted to take advantage, because having the Adventis certification on your resume shows that you have technical skills in Excel, which are extremely important in finance,” he explained.

After completing the in-person boot camp, Iker continued preparing for the certification exam and earned his credential shortly after. The experience provided a hands-on introduction to Excel and financial modeling that he was not getting in the classroom.

“If I hadn’t taken the Adventis boot camp and gotten certified, my Excel class would have been way more difficult,” he said.

From keyboard shortcuts to model organization, the program emphasized efficiency and real-world application.

“Simple tricks like using the keyboard instead of the mouse save you a lot of time,” he noted. “And the macros are super useful to color-code and organize everything.”

With these skills, Iker was able to approach technical coursework and recruiting with greater confidence.

Turning Technical Skills into Interview Success

The impact of Adventis became especially clear during Iker’s recruiting process. While interviewing for his role at J.P. Morgan Private Bank, he was asked to explain how he developed his technical abilities.

During his Superday, he walked interviewers through the rigor of the program, including building a three-statement model under time constraints. “I talked about how it was a certification where I had to construct the three financial statements and have no critical errors,” he explained.

That ability to clearly articulate hands-on experience helped him stand out and demonstrate readiness for the role.

Finding Direction and Building Confidence

Beyond technical skills, Iker values how Adventis helped him better understand his interests within finance.

“It’s a great way to start off and not only develop your technical side, but also get an idea of where you want to go,” he said.

The program gave him early exposure to the type of work involved in more technical roles, helping him evaluate potential career paths with greater clarity.

Persistence Pays Off

Iker’s journey was not without challenges. Like many students, he faced repeated rejection early in college. “I felt like I was getting rejected from everything,” he shared. Instead of being discouraged, he used those experiences to grow.

“You might just be twenty no’s away from a yes,” he said. “At the end of the day, you just need one yes.”

That persistence, combined with the technical foundation he built through Adventis, ultimately led to his offer at J.P. Morgan Private Bank.

For Iker, the lesson is clear: success in finance is not about starting ahead. It is about taking initiative, building skills, and staying committed to the process.
