Magnus did not enter college planning for a career in investment banking. As a student at Amherst College studying math and philosophy, he initially pursued the pre-med track with an interest in healthcare.

Over time, however, he began exploring finance and realized he was drawn to both the industry and the analytical work behind it. That exploration eventually led him to investment banking and, ultimately, a 2027 Investment Banking Summer Analyst role at TripleTree, a healthcare-focused investment bank where he could combine his interests in healthcare and finance.

Discovering Finance Through Adventis

Magnus first learned about Adventis after completing an internship with Magnetar Capital. Interested in learning more about finance, he connected with Amherst’s finance career advisor Stephanie Hockman, who recommended the Financial Modeling Certification® (FMC®) Program.

As someone attending a liberal arts college without access to many pre-professional finance courses, the FMC® Program gave Magnus exposure to practical technical skills he otherwise would not have encountered in the classroom.

The hands-on modeling work was especially impactful. Through Adventis, Magnus developed both technical proficiency and a clearer understanding of what investment banking work actually looks like day to day.

“Excel was a turning point for me. Coming from a liberal arts background, I hadn’t been exposed to that kind of technical training. But once I got into financial modeling with Adventis, I genuinely enjoyed it; it made me realize that finance was something I could see myself doing every day.”

Using Technical Preparation to Stand Out

Magnus included Adventis on his resume throughout the recruiting process and consistently referenced it during networking calls and interviews.

“I used Adventis in every ‘Why Finance’ and ‘Why Investment Banking’ answer… It gave me a way to show I had done the work…that I understood the role, had built the technical skills, and genuinely enjoyed the process.”

For Magnus, Adventis became more than a certification. It was proof that he had taken the initiative to understand the realities of the industry and prepare himself technically.

That preparation gave him confidence as he competed for opportunities alongside students from more traditional finance backgrounds.

“I remember looking at students who had been building financial modeling skills since high school and wondering how I could compete. Adventis helped me get up to speed quickly. It gave me the technical foundation and confidence to compete at the same level, and ultimately, to land the internship.”

Finding the Right Fit in Finance

One of the most important lessons Magnus learned during recruiting was the importance of aligning career goals with personal interests.

At first, he broadly pursued investment banking opportunities without a clear sense of direction. Over time, he realized that combining finance with his healthcare background made the most sense. That realization ultimately helped him identify TripleTree as the right fit and approach networking and interviews with greater clarity and authenticity.
