Michael’s Path to William Blair

Investment Banking Summer Analyst, William Blair

Michael, a sophomore studying accounting and finance at Miami University, knew early on that investment banking recruiting would require both technical preparation and strong networking. Originally from the Cleveland area, he began exploring the industry during his freshman year and quickly started reaching out to alumni and professionals across firms he admired.

“I got interested in investment banking about a year ago and started off my networking process with a lot of alumni at the school before moving on to individuals I saw at firms that I was interested in,” Michael explains.

At the same time, he enrolled in the Adventis Financial Modeling Certification® (FMC®) Program, a requirement for students in his school’s investment banking club. The experience would become a cornerstone of his technical preparation and play a key role in helping him stand out during recruiting.

His efforts paid off. After focusing his recruiting in the Chicago market, Michael ultimately secured an Investment Banking Summer Analyst position with William Blair.

Student Success Story: Building Real Technical Skills

Michael began the FMC® Program during the spring of his freshman year. For him, the biggest value was the hands-on nature of the training.

“I’d say it’s one thing just to read a guide with technical questions, but it’s a whole other thing to actually go through the motions of building out a financial model and seeing where things link and how things change.”

By building a three-statement model from the ground up, Michael developed a deeper understanding of how financial statements interact and how those relationships affect valuation.

“Even if I get a technical question now, I can think through how it’s going to impact the valuation and how it flows through the financial statements,” he says.

That deeper understanding made a meaningful difference during interviews.

Standing Out in Investment Banking Interviews

As Michael progressed through the recruiting process, the Adventis certification consistently came up in interviews.

“It actually came up in every single interview,” he recalls. “If they had heard of it, they knew it was a pretty rigorous program. If they hadn’t, they asked about it and were impressed by what you have to go through.”

The ability to discuss real financial modeling experience helped him demonstrate both technical competence and preparation. Rather than simply memorizing answers, he could explain how financial concepts worked in practice.

That level of understanding gave him the confidence to navigate technical interviews and ultimately secure his role with William Blair.

Advice for Future Investment Bankers

Now that he has landed his junior summer internship, Michael often shares advice with younger students in his club who are beginning their own journey.

“Understanding financial modeling isn’t just about building the model. It’s about understanding the technical concepts and being able to visualize them.”

He encourages students to focus on building real comprehension rather than memorizing interview questions.

“If you actually understand why things work through a financial modeling course like Adventis, you can work through problems you wouldn’t be able to otherwise.”

Michael also emphasizes starting the networking process early, before recruiting ramps up.

“Try to have your first networking calls in the late spring or summer so that by the time fall comes around, you already have a strong base of connections.”
