Adventis has partnered with the Miami University Investment Banking Club (MUIBC), giving members hands-on financial modeling training through the Financial Modeling Certification® (FMC®) Program.Nik grew up outside Cleveland, Ohio, with no early exposure to finance, until his uncle's private credit firm sparked his curiosity. That curiosity led him to Miami's investment banking club, and eventually to Adventis. Today, Nik is preparing to join Houlihan Lokey's business services group in Atlanta as a summer analyst.

From a Hobby Farm in Ohio to the Investment Banking Club

Before college, Nik had little exposure to the finance world. He grew up on a hobby farm outside Cleveland, and neither of his parents worked in finance. What changed his path was his uncle, who owns a private credit firm in Atlanta. Watching his uncle's career gave Nik a model to aim for, and he carried that motivation into Miami University, joining MUIBC as a freshman and competing in the William Blair case competition that same fall.

"Growing up on a farm taught me a good work ethic and how not to complain about things. Those skills carried over really well to academics and to my professional career."

Nik first heard about Adventis during a resume review session in the investment banking club, where upperclassmen who had earned the certification were landing interviews and offers.

"A lot of upperclassmen in the club had Adventis on their resume, and they all had interviews and offers, so I figured I should go after it too."

He enrolled during winter break of his freshman year, passed Level I, and earned Level II about a month later.

Building Technical Fluency Through the FMC® Program

For Nik, the value of the FMC® Program went beyond memorizing formulas. He found real value in seeing how the three financial statements connect to one another, something reading alone had not made clear.

"It was really cool understanding how everything links together across the different sheets, like how depreciation flows through the model. Actually building it yourself in Excel teaches you so much more than reading a guide could."

He completed his certification early, well before he worked through additional technical guides, and said the program gave him a strong baseline to build on. Two outgoing Adventis trainers later asked him to take over as Miami's Adventis trainer, a role that pushed his command of the material even further.

The credential also became a differentiator once recruiting began. Adventis is not universally known across finance, but Nik found that the people who do recognize it hold it in high regard.

"Adventis gave me a great talking point in interviews, and the people who know it really respect it."

Mentorship, Networking, and Landing at Houlihan Lokey

As an instructor, Nik has made a point of supporting underclassmen who remind him of himself as a freshman.

"I tell underclassmen that as long as they're curious, there's always a good ending point, no matter where they start. I want to be the same kind of support system for them that others were for me."

His biggest piece of advice for new partners and club leaders centers on the program's flexibility. Because students can move through the material at their own pace, repeat sections, and retake exams as needed, the fear of falling behind is largely removed.

"You get all the videos, you can take them at your own pace, repeat what you need, and retake the exam as many times as it takes. That removes a lot of the fear of messing up."

He also encourages students to expand their network beyond their own school, pointing to the strength of the Adventis alumni network as a resource. That combination of technical preparation, mentorship, and an expanded network helped Nik secure a place in Houlihan Lokey's business services group in Atlanta, where he will join as a summer analyst.
