Tyler’s Path to Goldman Sachs

Growing up just outside Chicago, Tyler had an early interest in business through buying and selling baseball cards, but his exposure to finance careers came much later. It was not until his freshman year at the University of Florida that he began to understand the landscape.

“I didn’t really know much of anything about investment banking, I just thought it was interesting,” he explains. After taking an introductory finance course and speaking with older students, Tyler identified investment banking as the right path. Still, he knew he needed a strong technical foundation to compete.

That turning point came the summer after his freshman year when he enrolled in Adventis’s Financial Modeling Certification® (FMC®) Programand earned both Level I and Level II certifications. The experience quickly became central to his development.

Building Technical Confidence with Adventis

For Tyler, the value of the FMC® Program was rooted in practical skill-building. “One of the most underrated skills that I learned was Excel,” he says. “I learned a great deal of Excel shortcuts, which I know is going to be helpful during my full-time job.”

Beyond Excel, the program gave him something more impactful: real modeling experience.

“You can study guides like the 400 Questions, but there’s no substitute for actually building a model. Real understanding comes from doing.”

This hands-on approach allowed Tyler to move beyond memorization and develop a deeper understanding of financial modeling and valuation. As a result, he was able to confidently articulate technical concepts during networking and interviews.

Standing Out in Interviews

Tyler’s involvement with Adventis extended beyond certification. He became a Student Trainer, leading in-person boot camps and teaching peers the same technical skills that helped him succeed. That leadership experience became a key differentiator during the recruiting process.

“Interviewers asked a lot about my student trainer role. I lead the boot camp and teach the material we’re expected to know for interviews, which they found especially impressive.”

His ability to both understand and teach financial modeling demonstrated mastery and initiative. Combined with his technical preparation, it helped him secure an Investment Banking Summer Analyst role with Goldman Sachs in Chicago.

Turning a Late Start into an Advantage

Unlike many peers who began preparing for investment banking early, Tyler felt behind at first. “I honestly had no idea what I wanted to do until the end of my freshman year,” he says. That realization fueled his work ethic. “I kind of felt like there was a chip on my shoulder,” he explains. “It motivated me to work harder.”

He used that momentum to fully immerse himself in technical training, combining Adventis with additional preparation and involvement in a student-run investment fund. By sophomore year, he had closed the gap and positioned himself competitively for recruiting.

Advice for Future Students

Looking back, Tyler emphasizes the importance of building real technical skills early. “Learning modeling from Adventis versus just reading plain guides… it’s actually helpful to have an example there and easier to wrap your brain around.”

His journey highlights how structured, hands-on training through Adventis can accelerate a student’s path into high finance. With the right foundation, even those who start later can quickly gain the skills and confidence needed to succeed.
