Daniel's Path from Grand Valley to Private Equity
Adventis has built a growing presence at Grand Valley State University, equipping students with the technical skills needed to compete for roles in investment banking, private equity, and beyond through the Financial Modeling Certification® (FMC®) Program. Daniel, a finance student from Holland, Michigan, and Grand Valley Class of 2027, is one of those students. After working his way through competitive finance recruiting, he landed a private equity internship. He credits the FMC® Program with giving him the technical foundation to succeed once he got there.
How the FMC® Program Built Daniel's Technical Foundation
Daniel came to finance through an unconventional path. Growing up in Holland, Michigan, he developed an analytical curiosity during COVID, researching the stock market, studying companies, and teaching himself the basics of investing. That passion for numbers led him to Grand Valley, where he joined the Seidman Investment Portfolio Organization (IPO), the university's investment club, and began building the connections that would define his early career.
He first heard about Adventis through Michigan State's finance program and a recommendation from a friend, and enrolled in the FMC® Program after securing his private equity internship offer. His goal was preparation, not just credentials.
"Before I took Adventis, I kind of understood the concepts, but they really started to click and make sense once I went through the program. I wasn't just memorizing things, I actually understood them conceptually, so I didn't have to worry about getting pushed into a rabbit hole I couldn't navigate."
That shift from surface-level familiarity to genuine comprehension made a concrete difference once he was on the job.
Performing on the Job: Excel, Modeling, and Real Confidence
When Daniel arrived at his private equity internship, the FMC® Program's impact was immediate. The Excel shortcuts and formatting macros he'd practiced translated directly into day-to-day efficiency in a demanding, fast-paced environment.
"The Excel skills helped a lot, just navigating Excel, knowing different shortcuts, and the Adventis macros helped a ton with quick formatting. It made me more effective right away."
Beyond efficiency, the three-statement modeling foundation he'd built gave him the core to take on more advanced work.
"Adventis really gave me that strong core I could build off of. I could take the three-statement model and start building more advanced DCFs and LBOs because I understood how it all connected. That foundation made the harder stuff make sense."
That kind of grounded technical understanding, developed by building models rather than just reading about them, is exactly what separates candidates who perform in interviews from those who perform on the job.
Bringing Adventis to Grand Valley's Investment Club
Daniel didn't keep that advantage to himself. Working with club leadership and Adventis, he helped bring the FMC® Program into Seidman IPO, enrolling around 18 to 20 members, most of them freshmen, in the fall semester.
"It's a $200 to $300 investment that could set you up for a six-figure offer and the next two to three years of your career. If you put the time in, it gives you a huge leg up in recruiting."
He's also had direct conversations with employers in the Grand Rapids area, and the feedback has been consistent: candidates who have taken Adventis stand out.
"A lot of employers told me that if someone had taken Adventis, they'd have a pretty good chance in their process. It shows initiative, and it gives them something concrete to point to."
With a strong incoming class of freshmen now enrolled before recruiting even begins, Daniel is helping set a new standard for technical preparation at Grand Valley, one that could produce meaningful placement results for years to come.
