Jimmy's Journey from the University of Illinois to J.P. Morgan
Adventis has built a meaningful presence at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign's Gies College of Business, equipping students with the technical skills required to compete in top finance recruiting. One of those students is Jimmy, a sophomore studying finance and accounting, who went from knowing nothing about investment banking to landing an Investment Banking Summer Analyst role at J.P. Morgan in Chicago through hard work, the Financial Modeling Certification® (FMC®) Program, and a commitment to helping others do the same.
From Entrepreneurship Class to Investment Banking
Jimmy's path into finance was, by his own admission, guided as much by curiosity as by design. A high school entrepreneurship course sparked his interest in business, and when he arrived at Illinois, he explored everything from wealth management to corporate finance before finding his focus.
The turning point came when he attended an info night for Prime Mergers and Acquisitions, a freshman-facing organization that gives students a firsthand look at the sell-side M&A process.
"I went to it, I listened, and I was hooked immediately. I really had no idea what IB was heading into college, but once I saw what my career could look like in investment banking, I did everything I could to learn as much as I could."
That drive led Jimmy to the Investment Banking Academy, a selective on-campus organization where Adventis certification is a membership requirement. Joining it put him on a path he hadn't anticipated, and ultimately into one of the most competitive internship seats in the country.
How the FMC® Program Helped Jimmy Win a Case Competition and Land J.P. Morgan
When Jimmy began building financial models for case competitions, the technical side felt overwhelming at first. The FMC® Program changed that.
"I had no idea what I was doing until I did my Adventis training. And more so, really, until I started working to become a Student Trainer, because then I was really practicing the model and trying to get it down under an hour."
That preparation paid off during the Investment Banking Academy's recruitment case competition, where teams were given only a company's 10-K and two weeks to build a full M&A pitch. Jimmy's team built a model that stood apart.
"Adventis was the reason I was able to dig deep into a model and understand what the numbers actually mean, not just at face value, but what the ratios mean, how to interpret a valuation, and what it says about the future of the company."
His team's model was the only one to correctly project the stock's direction, calling a sell when others were bullish. The stock fell the following week.
In his actual recruiting interviews, the FMC® Program and his Student Trainer role came up in nearly every conversation.
"In every interview during my recruitment process, I was asked about Adventis, specifically about being a trainer. When I said I teach students how to build financial models, that really helped me. It showed I had experience a little different from everyone else."
Teaching the Next Class What the Model Really Means
Jimmy's involvement with Adventis didn't stop at certification. As a Student Trainer, he now runs boot camps and grades live exams, often spending late nights tracking down errors in student models before Friday deadlines.
He sees a direct parallel between that work and what the job in banking will actually require.
"I tell students: if you're serious about going into investment banking, use this as practice for what that will eventually look like. Getting knee deep in a model, trying to find the error because you have to send it to the client by morning, that's the job."
For Jimmy, the grind of the trainer role reinforced everything the FMC® Program built. The combination of earning the certification, teaching the material, and competing with a real model gave him something concrete to point to in every interview, and the confidence to back it up.
